The Double Decker Arts Festival is everything you need in a weekend trip. It has amazing food, fun drinks, shopping, art and of course, music. But for some, the festival in all its greatness can be a little overwhelming. So here is a short guide to make the most out of YOUR Double Decker Arts Festival experience.
Ride the Bus
This festival is centered around a lot of things, but mostly around these buses. The Double Decker buses will run every 15 minutes during the festival and you should be on one. It is a wonderful way to see the entire festival and Oxford from a bird’s eye view in its glory. To ride the top level of the bus is $5 and seats on the bottom level are free. (10am-3:30pm)
Look at ALL the Art Booths
People come from far and wide to display their work at this festival. Each tent has its own unique personality and is always welcoming. Some items include home decor, kitchen items, paintings, jewelry, and more. So take the time to walk through and see what these folks have to offer. You might find something you never knew you needed.
Go to the Concerts
The Double Decker Festival always has performances for all different genres and styles. They are a great way to take a break from walking to dance instead. These concerts are the pinnacle of the festival with this year’s headliner being The Cold War Kids.
Take a Break on a Balcony
After a long day of dancing to the music and looking at some great art pieces, sometimes you just need to sit, drink a beer and observe how lucky you are. So during your time at Double Decker this year, carve out some time to sit on one of the many balconies that overlook the Square and fully appreciate where you are.
Don’t Forget About the Night Life
Double Decker is great time to blow off some steam like a college kid. The bars freckled around the Square go to the next level during the festival and are always a fun way to get the full Oxford experience. So go get your old college drink and leave your watch at home because you’ve earned some time to be a little irresponsible.
Check Your Kid in at the Square Fair
The Square Fair is located directly to the right of the stage. Here, you can check in your child and they will receive a wristband with a parent’s phone number, just in case they wander off. Double Decker usually has a very large crowd and one can never be too safe with their little ones.
Cool Off and Grab a Mempop or Sno Biz
Mempops is a sponsor of Double Decker who make locally sourced, organic popsicles that are either fruit or cream based. These pops are delicious and a wonderful way to beat the heat during the festival while your pound the pavement all day. Another option is of course the famous Sno Biz located right here in Oxford. These snow cones are sure to put a smile on anyone’s face and escape the hot sunshine for a little while. Which ever you choose, it is sure to be delicious!
Find your Favorite Specialty Drinks
Many of the restaurants and bars will create a drink specifially to celebrate Double Decker. So walk around and find your favorites. These establishments that make up the Historic Square have their own unique personalities, and they have unique drinks to match to celebrate the occasion that is Double Decker. So if you aren’t a frozen treat kind of person, cool off with something a little more adult.
Take in a Game
This year Double Decker is also the same weekend that Ole Miss Baseball plays LSU in a home series. So if you wanna enjoy America’s pastime during this weekend as well, they’ve got you covered. Swazye Field at Oxford University Stadium has an environment all its own and could round out your entire Double Decker experience.
Take Home a Keep Sake
If you didn’t get a shirt, did you really go? Double Decker is something that you will always want to remember. Its an experience that you will want to tell your friends and family about. An experience that you will want to relive and revisit over and over again. So do yourself a favor now, bring home a shirt.
The Double Decker Arts Festival is truly one of a kind. The environment, the joy, the charm. This festival will surely leave an impression on you. So cheers to doing it right the first time.
